You’ve been in an auto accident, now what?

Stay calm and make sure everyone is alright.

If there are injuries from anyone involved call 911 right away.

By law in Ontario, if the damage exceeds $2000 (between both vehicles combined), you are required to file a police accident report and/or if you suspect the other driver may be intoxicated call the police.

If there is no damage or it is less than $2000 combined, you do not have to report an accident.

If possible please take photographs of the damage to all vehicles.

Exchange Information: Names, address, phone no., insurance company, & policy no.

Take precautions to not be hit by another vehicle, turn on your hazard lights. Move your vehicle to the side of the road, if possible.

If there are any witnesses to the accident, record their name, contact information and what they saw.

Call your broker

If damages are $2000 or less after collecting the other person’s information go to a Collision Reporting Center within 24 hrs of the accident.

Make sure to keep a copy of the Accident Report.

Reporting a Claim

Whenever possible, please call our office and speak with our brokers so we can help guide you through the process. If it is an emergency please call your insurance company directly as they are available 24/7.

We recommend that you do not discuss the accident with anyone but the police prior to contacting us. Don’t sign anything, discuss liability, or accept fault with others involved or with witnesses.

Please have ready:

  • Your name, company name, phone number and e-mail address
  • Your policy number (if available)
  • The type of loss you are reporting (auto, property, etc.)

For auto claims please have ready:

  • The year, make, model and VIN of your vehicle (all found on your pink slip)
  • All of the information you recorded on the other person(s) involved in the accident; if necessary get the license plate # of anyone who will not co-operate
  • Details of the accident, where, who, when and if possible take photos
  • Copy of the Accident Report
